Praktisk Medicin offers training on Duchenne muscular dystrophy – to increase the knowledge of healthcare professionals in the Nordic countries

2020/05/25

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is not only the most common genetic neuromuscular disease in children but also one of the most serious. Improving the state of knowledge of healthcare professionals is therefore an important factor in the care of this group of patients.

The training is aimed at healthcare staff in Sweden and Norway and has been developed in collaboration with Thomas Sejersen, chief physician and professor at the Department of Neuropediatrics at Astrid Lindgren’s Children’s Hospital, Karolinska University Hospital.

To make it easier for healthcare professionals to undergo the training, it is presented on a digital platform with regard to the healthcare staff’s time, pedagogical structure and with special focus on a high proportion who complete the training.

– It is especially important to increase knowledge about DMD in certain occupational groups, says Thomas Sejersen.
The education contributes to the health care system being able to pay better attention to the signs and symptoms of the disease, which in turn speeds up the diagnosis.

– If there are signs of DMD, it is important that healthcare professionals provide quick, easy screening in the form of blood tests with measurement of the muscle-specific enzyme creatine kinase (CK). If it is greatly elevated, a genetic sample must be taken for DMD, states Thomas Sejersen.

Add Health Media has operations in all the Nordic countries for both patients and healthcare staff, and the fact that the training is now also available in Norway strengthens the organization’s contact points in the Nordic countries.

– We are happy to be able to present our educations under the brand Praktisk Medicin as we know that they are important partly for further training of care staff but not least for the patient’s sake. More trained care staff increases patient safety in care. We fully understand the challenges facing doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals and have therefore adapted and developed these educations that are of high quality while being effectively feasible. We will launch more educations soon and look forward to helping to strengthen the state of knowledge in healthcare, says Johan Bloom, business developer at Add Health Media.

The hope is to make the current training for healthcare staff in Denmark and Finland available as early as Q2 this year.

Here you will find the Swedish version of the education and here the Norwegian.
